Eye Color

If you’ve got a set of baby blues, studies suggest your eyes are more vulnerable than people with brown eyes.

Age

Children generally receive three times the annual UV exposure of adults, and their developing eyes are especially vulnerable to UV-related damage.

Geography

If you live in the southern half of the United States, you receive more intense UV rays than your neighbors to the north. This is due to your closer proximity to the equator—and therefore the sun.

Time of Day

UV levels are highest between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. More than one-third of Americans spend time outdoors during this peak exposure period, according to The Vision Council.

Time of Year

Unsurprisingly, UV levels are highest during the summer months in the U.S.

Occupation

If you ply your trade outdoors, your eyes are at greater risk of exposure. Construction, landscaping, and farming are obvious high-risk occupations, but crossing guards, golf instructors, lifeguards, and even real estate agents spend a great deal of time exposed to UV light.

Environment

Reflected UV from surfaces like water, snow, and concrete is also damaging. So highly reflective environments also increase your risk of exposure.

Altitude

Those majestic peaks may make for amazing views, but they also up the UV intensity due to the thinner atmosphere filtering out less of the sun’s radiation.
